Emerald Ash Borer: This Asian beetle infests and kills North American ash species including green, white, black, and blue ash. S-shaped channels are found under the bark caused by larval feeding in the winter. Newly formed adult beetles leave distinctive D-shaped exit holes in the outer bark of the branches and the trunk beginning in May.
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: The hemlock wooly adelgid, is a serious pest of Eastern hemlock in the northeastern states. The hemlock woolly adelgid sucks sap from the young branches which results in premature needle drop and branch dieback. The presence of these woolly flecks on twigs and at the base of the hemlock needles is the most obvious indicator of an infestation.
Eastern Tent Caterpillar: Native to North America, the Eastern Tent Caterpillar population fluctuates from year to year with outbreaks occurring in spring and early summer every few years. Nests are commonly found on wild cherry, apple and crabapple trees. Defoliation of trees, silk nests in trees and wandering caterpillars over plants are signs of their presence.
Fun Fact: In one day, one large tree can lift up to 100 gallons of water out of the ground and discharge it into the air
